NHSTalks Pathways: Public Speaking Do’s and Don’ts

The National Hellenic Society invited me to participate in its program on Public Speaking Do’s and Don’ts. I was pleased to take part with my friend and news colleague Laura Evans Manatos. I incorporated some of the curriculum I used in teaching Public Speaking to college students.

LAURA EVANS MANATOS

Laura Evans Manatos is President and Founder of Laura Evans Media. Before launching her media consulting business, Laura served as anchor of Fox 5 News at 5, the top rated 5pm newscast in the nation’s capital. In her 26 year journalism career, including 18 years as an anchor and reporter with Fox5DC News, Laura’s reporting earned her several honors and awards including two Emmys and five Emmy nominations, Associated Press Awards, Golden Mics and a Radio and Television News Directors Association Award for Best News Series. Washingtonian Magazine named Laura one of the rising stars in local television news.

Laura’s field anchoring assignments have included presidential inaugurations, political conventions, the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon, the sniper attacks on Washington. Her goal today is to break through the noise of negative news and ensure a variety of audiences learn about the innovative change makers among us.
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Laura moved to the Nation’s Capital from Santa Barbara where she anchored for the ABC affiliate and covered everything from California Wildfires, the Northridge Earthquake to the OJ Simpson murder trial.   


JOHN METAXAS

John Metaxas John is an award-winning broadcast journalist with three decades of on-air experience at CBS, CNN, ABC and other networks. For the past 14 years, John’s news broadcasts on WCBS Newsradio 880 have reached a million listeners every weekend. John’s Bloomberg Business reports can be heard on WCBS and other stations throughout the U.S.  At CNN, John anchored Your Money, the network’s weekly program on personal finance. He was CNN’s Nasdaq correspondent. His reports appeared internationally on the program Moneylinewith Lou Dobbs. 

For the past decade John has trained executives, lawyers and union leaders in making effective media appearances and crafting crisis communications. He has taught communications and journalism at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. He also served as Chief Corporate Communications officer at E*TRADE. John received his J.D. from Columbia Law, his M.S. from Columbia Journalism and his B.A. from Columbia College, cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
